About part number K8D2-18045-AB

A front strut shock absorber and spring assembly is a major component of a vehicle's front suspension system. It connects the wheel hub to the body structure, supporting the weight of the vehicle while absorbing impacts from bumps and uneven road surfaces. When the assembly is functioning correctly, the driver experiences a smooth, controlled ride with stable cornering, reliable braking, and consistent tyre contact with the road.

To ensure this is the correct component for your vehicle, you must check the part number directly against the one removed from your car. Look for the stamped or printed numbers on the outer metal casing of the original strut tube. You need to match the part number K8D2-18045-AB, or one of the related reference numbers K8D218045 or K8D2 18045, as matching the exact number is what determines correct fitment.

These units are commonly replaced due to fluid leaks from the internal shock absorber seals, metal fatigue causing a broken spring, or general wear that causes knocking noises and poor handling. When replacing a front strut assembly, it is standard trade practice to replace new top mount bearings, anti-roll bar drop links, and relevant mounting bolts at the same time to ensure safe and reliable operation.

  • Part type: Shocks, Struts & Assemblies.
  • Specification: country of origin United Kingdom.
  • Also numbered: K8D218045, K8D2 18045.

About this kind of part: shock absorbers and struts

A shock absorber damps the movement of a spring. A strut is a shock absorber that also locates the wheel, so it carries the spring, the top mount and often the brake hose and sensor brackets as well. On a car with adaptive suspension the damper holds a valve the car controls electrically and has a connector on it; on one with air suspension the spring is a rubber bellows with its own air line. These three kinds share a name and nothing else, and they are not interchangeable.

Why people replace one

  • The car floats or pitches after a bump, or the nose dives further than it used to under braking.
  • The damper is wet with oil down its body, which means the seal has gone and it has lost its fluid.
  • A knock from the top of the suspension over small bumps, which is usually the top mount or its bearing rather than the damper.
  • An inspection has advised on a leaking damper or on uneven damping across an axle.
  • On air suspension, the car settles overnight or will not raise, and a bellows has perished or an electrical damper has failed.
  • Tyres are scalloped or cupped across the tread, which is a damper no longer controlling the wheel.

Fitting it

  • Dampers are replaced in pairs across an axle. One new and one worn gives the car different damping on each side, which is worse than two worn ones.
  • A strut assembly holds a compressed spring. It must only be taken apart with a proper spring compressor, and a coil spring under compression will injure somebody if it escapes.
  • The top mount, its bearing and the bump stop are separate parts and are normally replaced at the same time, because they have done the same mileage.
  • An electrical damper usually needs no coding, but an air strut generally needs the system calibrating and the ride height set afterwards.
  • The car needs its alignment checked afterwards where a strut locates the wheel.
  • This is a safety-critical part of the car. If there is any doubt, have it fitted by a workshop.

Making sure it is the right one

  • Match the part number, and buy in pairs. Within one model there are commonly a standard, a sports and a self-levelling version, and the car was built with one of them.
  • Check which kind you have: a plain damper, an electrically adjustable one with a connector, or an air strut with an air line. Count the connector pins if there is one.
  • Check what is included. A bare damper, a damper with a spring, and a complete strut with the top mount fitted are three different things to buy.
  • Compare the brackets on the body. The mounts for the brake hose, the sensor lead and the anti-roll bar differ between versions and are what tells them apart.

What to look for in the photographs

A Part number — On a label or stamped into the body of the damper, often near the lower mount.
B Connector or air line — Whether the unit is electrically adjustable or air-sprung. This is the first thing to match, because the three kinds share nothing but a name.
C Damper body — Look down the body for oil, which means the seal has gone, and for pitting on the exposed rod.
D Top mount and bearing — Whether they are included and the state of the rubber. They have done the same mileage as the damper.
E Brackets — The mounts for the brake hose, the sensor lead and the anti-roll bar. These differ between versions and are how you tell them apart.
F Lower mount — The eye or fork at the bottom and the state of its bush. Compare the width and the bolt diameter with your own.
