About part number FK7215K272AC

A rear fog light is an exterior lighting component positioned at the back of the vehicle. Connected to the main lighting circuit, it produces a high-intensity red beam to make the vehicle visible to following traffic in thick fog, heavy rain, or falling snow. When switched on, the driver sees a dedicated warning symbol illuminated on the instrument panel.

To ensure this component is correct for your vehicle, you must check the part number stamped or printed directly onto the plastic housing or lens of your original unit. The number to match for this item is FK7215K272AC. Matching this exact reference is the only way to confirm a correct fit, as physical shape and internal electrical connectors vary.

A rear fog light is usually replaced due to impact damage, cracked lenses that allow water ingress, or internal electrical failure. When fitting a replacement, you may also need new fixing screws, retaining clips, or a replacement bulb if the light assembly does not use integrated LEDs.

About this kind of part: fog lamps

A fog lamp is a small sealed unit set into the lower corner of a front bumper, below the main headlamp. Its beam is wide and flat and cut off sharply at the top, which is what stops it reflecting back off fog, and that pattern is why it cannot be substituted with any other kind of lamp. On many cars the same housing also provides the cornering light that illuminates the direction the wheels are turned, and on some it is a daytime running light as well.

Why people replace one

  • A stone has broken the lens, which is almost inevitable on a lamp mounted this low and this far forward.
  • The housing has cracked or the mounting tabs have snapped in a light knock, because the fog lamp sits exactly where a bumper takes a kerb or a post.
  • Water has got into the unit through a failed seal and the lens mists up or the lamp has corroded internally.
  • The lens has clouded and yellowed from stone blasting and road salt.
  • The lamp has been removed for a bumper repair and the tabs were broken getting it out.

Fitting it

  • Most fog lamps are reached from behind the bumper cover, sometimes through the wheel arch liner and sometimes only with the bumper off.
  • They are held by two or three screws into a carrier, or clipped into a surround that is itself screwed to the bumper.
  • The aim is adjustable on most units and is set low and level. A fog lamp aimed upwards defeats its own purpose and dazzles.
  • The surround or finisher around the lamp is usually a separate part, and it is often what was broken rather than the lamp itself.

Making sure it is the right one

  • Match the part number. Within one model there are commonly a plain fog lamp, one that also provides a cornering light, and a diode version, and they are not interchangeable.
  • Count the connector pins and compare the block with your own lamp. A lamp with extra functions has extra wires.
  • Check the lens marking against your own. It records the approval and the beam type, and a lamp of the wrong type is not a legal substitute.
  • Compare the mounting arrangement: some clip into a surround and some screw to a carrier, and the two cannot be swapped.

What to look for in the photographs

A Part number — On a label or moulded into the back of the housing.
B Lens marking — Etched into the lens: the approval and the beam type. Compare it with the marking on your own lamp.
C Connector — Count the pins. A plain fog lamp, one with a cornering light and a diode unit all differ here.
D Mounting tabs — The tabs or screw bosses that hold the lamp. These snap easily and are the most common hidden fault.
E Lens surface — Look across the lens at an angle. Stone pitting on a lamp this low shows in a raking light and disappears in a flat one.
F Seal and housing — The joint where the lens meets the housing, and the back cover. Water enters where these have been disturbed.
