A reinforcement bar is the steel or aluminium beam behind the painted bumper cover, bolted to the chassis legs through a pair of crush cans. It is the part that actually does the work in an impact: the cover is cosmetic, the foam absorber takes the low-speed knock, and the bar and its crush cans are engineered to deform in a controlled way and protect the chassis behind them. That is also why a deformed bar must be replaced rather than straightened.

Why people replace one

  • An impact has bent the bar or collapsed a crush can, which is exactly what they are designed to do and means both need replacing.
  • The bar is sound but the chassis legs behind it need a new mounting face, and the bar comes off anyway.
  • Corrosion has taken hold where a steel bar meets its mounting plates, which is common on an older car that has stood.
  • A towing eye thread in the bar has stripped.

Fitting it
