About part number 8056615

A rear bumper tow eye cover is a removable exterior trim piece that fits into the rear bumper panel. It covers the threaded aperture where a emergency towing eye screws into the chassis, keeping dirt out of the mounting point and giving the back of the vehicle a neat, finished appearance when the car is driven normally.

To confirm that this part is correct for your vehicle, you must match its part number to the number on your original cover. On a part of this type, the manufacturer number is usually stamped or moulded into the plastic on the reverse side. The manufacturer part number for this item is 8056615, and other numbers found on the part include 51128056615, 8054199, 51128054199, and KD. Matching the number is what decides whether it will fit your vehicle.

These covers are usually replaced because they have popped out, been lost, or suffered cosmetic damage to the paintwork. When replacing this component, a person commonly needs matching touch-up paint or paint refinishing materials if the cover requires colour-matching to the existing rear bumper.

About this kind of part: tow eye covers

A tow eye cover is the small painted flap or cap that hides the threaded towing point in a bumper. It is the smallest painted part on the outside of a car and the most frequently lost, because it is held by one or two plastic tabs and a short tether, and because it is removed only in the kind of situation where nobody is looking after small parts. It is painted to match the car, so a replacement either arrives in the correct colour already or needs spraying.

Why people replace one

• The cover has been lost after a recovery or a tow, which is what almost all of them are replaced for.
• A tab has snapped and the cover no longer clips flat, so it rattles or falls out at speed.
• The tether has broken and the cover was dropped and not found.
• A jet wash has lifted an unclipped cover out of the bumper.
• The paint no longer matches because the cover is a different age from the bumper around it.

Fitting it

• It pushes in from the outside until the tabs engage, and it comes out by pressing one edge in and easing the other out.
• Where there is a tether, it hooks to a lug moulded inside the bumper opening before the cover is pushed home.
• Fit it cold-side-out and press on the edges rather than the middle, which is where a stiff cover cracks.
• A cover supplied in primer needs the paint code from the car's own identification plate to match the bumper.

Making sure it is the right one

• Match the part number. The front cover and the rear cover of the same car are different parts, and so are the covers of different trim levels on one model.
• Compare the shape of the opening, not just the size. A cover is contoured to the curve of the bumper it sits in and will not sit flat in a different one.
• Check the tab pattern and whether yours has a tether lug. These change between a facelift and the version before it.
• If the cover is supplied painted, treat the colour as a starting point rather than a match, because a used painted part has aged with its own car.
