A bracket is the moulded or pressed part that holds a panel, a lamp or a bumper to the body of the car. It is hidden once everything is assembled, and it is designed to break: the bracket is cheap and the panel it carries is not, so in a light knock the bracket gives way first and takes the energy. That is why a car with no visible damage often still needs them, and why they are replaced far more often than the parts they hold.

Why people replace one

• A low-speed knock has snapped the bracket while leaving the panel it holds undamaged.
