About this kind of part: brackets and mountings

A bracket is the moulded or pressed part that holds a panel, a lamp or a bumper to the body of the car. It is hidden once everything is assembled, and it is designed to break: the bracket is cheap and the panel it carries is not, so in a light knock the bracket gives way first and takes the energy. That is why a car with no visible damage often still needs them, and why they are replaced far more often than the parts they hold.

Why people replace one

  • A low-speed knock has snapped the bracket while leaving the panel it holds undamaged.
  • A panel sits proud, droops at one end, or has a gap that will not close, because the bracket behind it has cracked.
  • A rattle or a creak over bumps, where a broken bracket is letting a panel move against the body.
  • The bracket was broken during a previous repair, taking a bumper or a lamp off, and never replaced.
  • A lamp or a panel has been held on with tape, glue or a repair plate and the proper part is wanted.

Fitting it

  • Most brackets are reached only with the panel they carry removed, so the job is usually done at the same time as the panel comes off anyway.
  • They are held by screws, plastic nuts or clips into the body, and the fasteners are often broken on removal and worth having to hand.
  • A bracket sets the position of the panel in front of it, so the panel gaps are worth checking before everything is tightened down.
  • Where a bracket has snapped, look at the body mount behind it as well. The same knock often distorts the metal the bracket screws to.

Making sure it is the right one

  • Match the part number. Brackets are handed, and the two sides of a car take different numbers even where they look like mirror images.
  • A bracket is specific to the panel it carries and to the trim level, so one from a different version of the same model may locate in the body and still hold the panel in the wrong place.
  • Count the fixing points and compare their spacing with the broken part in front of you. This is the quickest check there is.
  • A repair plate is not the same part. If the original has snapped, the proper bracket restores the panel position; a plate holds it wherever it happens to sit.

What to look for in the photographs

A Part number — Moulded or stamped into the body of the bracket. This is the number to match, because handed parts look alike.
B Fixing points — The holes, slots and studs that screw to the body. Count them and compare the spacing with your own part.
C Locating pegs — The pins or tabs that set the panel's position. A sheared peg means the panel will sit wrong even though the bracket bolts up.
D Stress points — The narrow sections and the moulded ribs, where a bracket fails. Look at these rather than at the broad faces.
E Handing — Which way the arms and tabs face. Hold the photograph against your own part rather than judging by the overall shape.
